This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, District 1-Lower Brule Agency in Lower Brule, South Dakota. The Office of Justice Services, within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, is searching for an individual to serve as a Police Officer for the Division of Law Enforcement Services, District 1 Lower Brule Agency in Lower Brule, SD. The mission of the Office of Justice Services is to uphold the constitutional sovereignty and customs of Tribes while protecting the rights of the people; protect life and property; ensure employment suitability; and promote and preserve peace within Indian country. This includes enforcement of major Federal crimes and state crimes under Federal statute and Tribal laws.

The full performance level of this position is GL-08. ### Responsibilities
* Responds to calls concerning felonies, emergencies, traffic accidents, drug charges, altercations, and misdemeanors under Federal, State, local, and tribal laws; investigates, apprehends, arrests, and detains all persons charged with violations.
* Maintains law and order within the area of assignments by patrolling in a patrol vehicle, investigating suspicious situations, and taking action as appropriate.
* Performs such assignments as working radar on busy highways, participating in night surveillance in high crime areas, and participating in traffic and crowd control activities.
* Makes arrests in cases of crime or misdemeanors personally witnessed; takes persons arrested to appropriate authorities for booking or formal charging.
* Serves Federal, State, local or tribal warrants, subpoenas and other court papers.
* Prepares and submits reports of incidents or traffic accidents, daily and weekly activities, and narratives and statistical reports as required.
* Testifies in official capacity at Tribal, State, and Federal hearings.

### Qualifications
To qualify at the GL-06 level, you must have one year specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS/GL-05 grade level performing Police Officer work. Experience at this level may include independently applying investigative procedures to detect and resolve crimes requiring extensive research, including interviewing, planning, observing, conducting stakeout operations; and executing investigations which result in the arrests of suspects.
In addition to the experience at the lower grade level, to qualify at the GL-07 level, you must have one year specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS/GL-06 grade level performing Police Officer or Criminal Investigative work. Experience at this level may include applying investigative procedures to detect and resolve crimes requiring extensive research, including interviewing witnesses; planning, observing, conducting stakeout operations; executing investigations which result in the arrests of suspects; and conducting long-term investigations (several weeks) to detect and apprehend criminal violations of such felonies as theft, assault, homicide, illegal entry, violations of controlled substances, etc. Examples of experience at this level may include developing long-term undercover operations to detect and prevent criminal activity, developing informant networks for specific assignments, and developing long-term case information and facts for use in pressing charges and bringing suspects to trial.
In addition to the experience at the lower grade levels, to qualify at the GL-08 level, you must have one year experience at or equivalent to the GS/GL-07 grade level performing Police Officer or Criminal Investigative work. Experience at this level may include independently conducting long-term investigations which required coordination with external federal, state, or local agencies; and providing police protection during highly volatile emergency situations. Examples may include identifying courses of action during hostage situations, kidnappings, terrorist attacks, armed robbery, or other life-threatening situations.

MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE LIMIT: The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian law enforcement [or firefighter, if applicable] experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in the loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.
